Long before Northbound became a familiar stopping point for motorists on the A19, research into the history of the site suggests that the land played its own part during the Second World War. The area is believed to have been used as a “wet site” connected with the storage of munitions, forming part of the extensive wartime infrastructure that developed across the North East. It provides a fascinating glimpse into the site’s history before the arrival of the modern A19—and means that, decades before serving motorists and commercial vehicles, the land may already have been playing an important role in keeping Britain moving.
